(ThyBlackMan.com) Ok Reports have surfaced about Rapper Common and YM Drake’s beef coming to a head during the Grammy Awards last week, when they finally met face-to-face. There’s various versions of what happened, but in the end, we hear things ended with their issues being resolved.
While notorious gossip giant MTO cited a “reliable insider” when reporting that Com and Drizzy got into a brief “fist fight” backstage after exchanging words, sources told us while they did get into a shouting match fists were never thrown.
Publicist Robert Santini of PKM*BNC tweeted about the alleged incident on Sunday night (February 12), writing, “@ Drake and @ Common had an altercation backstage & @liltunechi had to intervene. This is getting out of hand.”
As you can see, there were various versions of what happened, but HHW ran a story similar to what we heard from our own sources:
Here it is below, via HHW:
YM Drake and Rapper Common’s entourages happened to be in the same area at the end of the Grammy red carpet, near where artists were being distributed their VIP credentials to enter the Staples Center, according to a source in the latter’s camp. Rapper Common felt it was awkward for two men that had exchanged words in song to be in the same vicinity without saying anything to each other. With the two eyeballing each other intensely, Common asked YM Drake, “What’s up?”
YM Drake responded with a “What’s up?” of his own, and Common tried to approach him with the intent of speaking to the Toronto rapper one on one. However, YM Drake’s security and other members of his entourage defensively intervened in his progress. Allegedly Drake said, “Yo, I grew up listening to this dude, what’s the problem?,” while his security was telling Rapper Common, “We respect you, this isn’t necessary.”
But Rapper Common wanted to talk to Drake “man to man,” angered that two rivals would cross paths and just not speak.
One of the members of YM Drake’s crew turned out to be his father, Dennis Graham, who told Common the two artists “need to cut this out, y’all are better than this.” According to the source, the elder Graham’s intervention made Com change his approach, with cooler heads prevailing and the two rappers eventually going off to the side and speaking to each other alone. Holding true to the words he said in an interview moments before, Common and YM Drake exchanged pounds, and told everyone in their respective camps the beef had been squashed.
Police did arrive after hearing about a commotion, however they did not need to intervene with the situation already having been settled. Also, according to our source, no other YMCMB artists were present, which could have aided in the situation not getting out of hand.
The Rapper Common/ YM Drake beef has been brewing for the last few months, beginning with the release Common’s single/video for “Sweet,” followed by a shot from Drake on Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’,”, which the Chicago emcee then flipped and directly popped off shots at the YMCMB star.
Since then, however, both have downplayed the beef. Common said it was over, unless Drake fired back; while the Canadian rapper said he wouldn’t respond at all, accusing Common of using him for publicity.
